Language diversity is essential to human heritage. Approximately six thousand languages still exist throughout the world – the living embodiement of a plurality of cultures – but many are in danger of being lost. UNESCO’s Constitution includes the maintenance and perpetuation of language diversity as a basic principle. Within this context, the CCI is hosting a panel discussion focusing on the state of affairs regarding the minoritised Celtic languages of Ireland, Scotland and Wales. From communities using these languages every day, to the work of professionals, associations and governments, how do efforts and policies promoting revitalisation compare in these neighbouring regions?
Chaired by Joseph Simpson, a specialist of both Welsh and Irish, the participants in tonight’s discussion are: Fearghus O Conchúir dancer, choregrapher and Irish-speaker, Judith Musker-Turner, sustainable development advisor of the Arts Council of Wales (Welsh Language, Climate Justice, Future Generations), and Peter Mackay, National Poet for Scotland, who writes primarily in Gaelic.
