Rock and Roll Minotaur – for the smokers

I hadn’t realised, not being a smoker, the new relationship that smokers have to the buildings in which they work. They are often to be found huddling in niches, porches and doorways or on this occasion enjoying the sun from a convenient wall. I’m sure there’s potential in developing work for this temporary audience – though I wouldn’t want anyone to think I was encouraging their smoking.

    There is a body of photographs by an artist called Sean Lynch that this reminded me of… it’s a series of smokers at the Seagram Building designed by Mies van der Rohe in New York. The artist talks about how in the modernist tradition of the building people could of course have smoked anywhere within it, but now a cultural shift has happened that makes this impossible…

    Smokers would be a really interesting micro-community. Great idea.
